Life in a Changing Landscape, Phase II

Project introduction

Life in a Changing Landscape, Phase II is a collaborative programme led by the Alliance for Environmental Intervention and the Ghana Youth Environmental Movement in the Asuogyaman District of Ghana’s Eastern Region.

The programme builds on a pilot implemented between November 2024 and April 2025. It supports farming communities in responding to unpredictable rainfall, land degradation, declining soil fertility and other pressures affecting smallholder agriculture.

Background

During the pilot phase, AfEI and GYEM worked with farmers to understand local farming conditions and develop practical responses through participatory training, demonstration activities and follow-up field visits.

The pilot informed the development of the Adaptive Farmer approach, which combines Climate and Nature-Smart Agriculture, agroforestry, soil restoration, water conservation and peer learning.

A training-of-trainers approach was introduced to equip farmer-group leaders to share knowledge within their communities.

Implementing organisations

Alliance for Environmental Intervention

AfEI contributes experience in Climate and Nature-Smart Agriculture, farmer mobilisation, environmental education, community engagement and safeguarding.

Ghana Youth Environmental Movement

GYEM contributes experience in youth leadership, climate advocacy, agroecology and environmental innovation.

Programme hubs

AfEI Adaptation Village

A practical demonstration and training hub supporting learning in composting, mulching, soil restoration, agroforestry, sustainable planting and water conservation.

GYEM ACRE Hub

A field-based learning facility incorporating a demonstration farm, seedling nursery, irrigation system, organic-composting facility, repurposed container unit and space for training and stakeholder engagement.

Programme objective

To strengthen climate resilience in the Asuogyaman District through Climate and Nature-Smart Agriculture and agroforestry that support food security, ecosystem restoration and the participation of women and young people.

Programme targets

AfEI and GYEM have set the following targets for the programme:

• Reach more than 1,200 farmers over two years.
• Ensure that at least 60% of participating farmers are women and young people.
• Strengthen practical farmer knowledge.
• Support improved soil management and agricultural resilience.
• Strengthen farmer groups and peer learning.

Longer-term aspiration

AfEI and GYEM envisage farming communities in Asuogyaman with healthier landscapes, more resilient agricultural systems and stronger opportunities for women and young people. This is the change the programme is working towards.

Partnership and implementation

AfEI and GYEM jointly plan, implement and monitor the programme. Activities may include jointly developed training materials, workshops, practical field learning, monitoring visits and a consolidated learning and impact report.

The programme also seeks engagement with relevant public institutions, traditional authorities, farmer organisations and community stakeholders.
