Life in a Changing Landscape Report – Adaptation Village Practical Training

On Friday, 17th April 2026, the AfEI and GYEM teams held an advanced practical training session with smallholder farmers at AfEI’s Adaptation Village under the Life in a Changing Landscape project.

This session is the Phase Two of the project’s capacity-building approach. In Phase One, participants engaged in classroom-based training sessions where they received theoretical knowledge on climate change, sustainable agriculture, and adaptive farming practices. These sessions laid the foundation for understanding climate risks and the importance of transitioning toward climate-resilient farming systems.

Building on this foundation, Phase Two introduced a “living classroom” concept at the Adaptation Village, where learning moved beyond theory into hands-on practice. During the practical training, participants were guided by project team leads through sustainable planting techniques. Farmers actively participated in the process, preparing planting areas, learning correct spacing, handling seedlings, and planting themselves under supervision.

The experiential nature of the training made the session very engaging and memorable for participants. The session gave farmers confidence and practical skills necessary to implement climate-smart agriculture on their own farms.

The Adaptation Village now serves as a demonstration and learning hub where participants can observe tangible results of sustainable practices over time. In the next phase of the project, training activities will transition to participants’ individual farms, where the project team will provide on-site support to help farmers replicate and adapt the learned practices within their local farming contexts.
