Youth for Water and Climate

The Sustainable and Smart Water Life Project was funded by the Global Water Partnership (GWP) under the Youth for Water and Climate Contest, where Alliance for Environmental Intervention (AfEI) emerged as one of the winners among several international entries.

This initiative aimed to tackle critical water challenges faced by farmers in Ghana, particularly their heavy reliance on unpredictable rainfall. The project also integrated climate change adaptation strategies to promote sustainable farming practices.

Project Location:

Kwamoso, Eastern Region, Ghana

Key Activities and Achievements:

  • Partnered with selected farmers who offered their farmlands as demonstration fields.
  • Trained farmers in compost preparation techniques and smart agriculture methods to enhance crop yields while minimizing environmental impact.
  • Introduced simple, efficient irrigation systems using locally available materials to conserve water and reduce dependency on rain-fed agriculture.
  • Promoted the use of organic compost to reduce chemical pollution and improve soil health.

Impact:

The project successfully demonstrated practical solutions for water conservation and climate-smart agriculture. Farmers reported improved yields and reduced production costs. Additionally, the initiative highlighted agriculture as a viable livelihood option for unemployed youth in the community.

Challenges:

While the project achieved its objectives, minor logistical and resource-related challenges were encountered during implementation.
